Obamas On Board with Getting Kids Outside

February 22, 2010, by eugeneb

With childhood obesity or excess weight threatening the healthy future of one third of American children, President Barack Obama and First Lady, Michelle, are championing the same cause as Outdoor Parents, Outdoor Kids. Read on for more information about the president’s newly appointed Childhood Obesity Task Force and Michelle’s Let’sMove.com  Website designed to combat the issue.

According to the most recent statistics, the U. S spends $150 billion every year to treat obesity-related conditions, and that number is growing. Obesity rates tripled in the past 30 years, a trend that means, for the first time in our history, American children may face a shorter expected lifespan than their parents.

All this has prompted a nationwide campaign to tackle the challenge of childhood obesity.  As part of it, Let’s Move! has an ambitious but important goal: to solve the epidemic of childhood obesity within a generation. It gives parents the support they need, and helps kids to be more physically active.
